The Best Skin Care Routine, Step by Step (Morning and Evening)

Natalie Boll7 min read

Ask ten people for the best skin care routine and you will get ten different shelves. Yet skin itself is far less complicated than the marketing around it. It wants to be cleansed without being stripped, balanced at the right pH, given water, given lipids, protected through the day, and left alone long enough to do its own repair work. That is the whole brief — and it takes about four minutes, twice a day.

Below is the order we recommend, the reasoning behind each step, and how to adjust it for dry, oily, combination, sensitive, or dull-looking skin. Every step maps to one of our six certified organic formulas, so you can follow it with what you already have or build it gradually.

The golden rule: thinnest to richest

Skincare layers absorb best when you move from the lightest, most water-based textures to the richest, most oil-based ones. Water cannot pass through oil, so a serum applied after a cream mostly sits on the surface. Cleanse, then mist, then water serum, then oil serum, then cream. That single sequence solves most routine problems people write to us about.

Your morning routine, in four minutes

  • Step 1 — Cleanse: a gentle oil-to-milk cleanse with re.purify removes the night's residue without stripping. In the morning, one short pass is enough.
  • Step 2 — Balance: mist re.balance onto damp skin to restore comfortable pH and give the next layer water to hold on to.
  • Step 3 — Hydrate: press in re.hydrate, a multi-weight hyaluronic water serum, while skin is still damp. This is where plumpness comes from.
  • Step 4 — Nourish: seal with re.nourish barrier moisturiser, then finish with your own SPF. Daylight protection is the single most effective long-term step in any routine.

Your evening routine, where the real work happens

  • Step 1 — Cleanse twice: one pass of re.purify to lift sunscreen and makeup, a second to actually clean the skin.
  • Step 2 — Balance: re.balance mist, again on damp skin.
  • Step 3 — Hydrate: re.hydrate water serum, pressed rather than rubbed.
  • Step 4 — Replenish: two or three drops of re.glow, our 23-botanical vitamin oil serum, warmed between the palms and pressed over the face and neck.
  • Step 5 — Nourish: re.nourish to close the ritual and hold everything in overnight.

The sixth formula, re.fresh, is our botanical deodorant — the same standard of care extended beyond the face. It is not part of the facial sequence, which is why our facial ritual is five steps and the collection is six formulas.

The best routine is not the one with the most steps. It is the one your skin gets every single day.

How long should you wait between layers?

Long enough that each layer has absorbed, short enough that skin is still slightly damp — roughly twenty to thirty seconds. Waiting for skin to dry completely between steps is the most common reason a hydrating serum stops feeling hydrating: it needs surrounding moisture to draw on.

Adapting the routine to your skin

  • Dry or dehydrated-looking skin: two thin layers of re.hydrate before oil, and re.glow every evening.
  • Oily or combination skin: keep the full sequence but use re.glow only on drier zones; skipping oil entirely tends to make skin overcompensate.
  • Sensitive skin: introduce one new formula at a time, roughly a week apart, and always patch test on the inner forearm first.
  • Dull or uneven-looking skin: consistency beats intensity — the vitamin-rich oil serum nightly for a full month does more than an occasional strong treatment.

If you are unsure which formulas your skin needs first, our 1-minute skin diagnostic matches your concerns to specific botanicals and steps. You can also read what every ingredient does in the Botanical Apothecary.

Give it thirty days

Skin renews on its own schedule. A new routine needs about four weeks of daily use before you can judge it fairly — and that is exactly why simplicity matters more than sophistication. Six formulas you enjoy using will always outperform twelve you abandon.
